Nov. 14 Tarot Class – The Death Card

Filed Under Classes and Workshops | Comments Off on Nov. 14 Tarot Class – The Death Card

On Saturday, I had the pleasure of the company of five very bright, enthusiastic women for my class on the Death card.  Since even experienced readers can have difficulty when this card turns up in a reading, we spent some time discussing attitudes and depictions of death across centuries and cultures.  For example, in ancient Greece, Death was a male figure called Thanatos, who was the twin brother of Hypnos (sleep).  His counterpart was a female figure, Eros, the life force.

We also discussed memento mori through the ages (works of art designed to remind humans of their mortality) – interestingly, in the ancient world, memento mori were reminders to celebrate and live a joyous life; it wasn’t until the rise of the Christian church in early medieval Europe that they were reinterpreted as reminders to live a virtuous life.  We also talked about the Danse Macabre, renaissance faires, Black Plague, and funeral and burial customs.

I also played “So Sprich Das Leben” from the Medieavel Babes.  It’s a traditional German medieval piece, a dialogue between Life and Death.  Death tries to claim the world as hers, but every time, Life reminds Death that the world does indeed belong to Life.  If you haven’t heard this piece, I highly recommend it!

Everyone shared their experiences working with the card, including some instances where it actually referred to a physical death in the reading, and how to handle  that situation with compassion and grace.

The afternoon took an artistic bent as we pulled out the markers and pastels and took some time to draw our own Death cards.  While mine certainly won’t win any prizes for artistic realism, the symbols were dramatic!

A bit more discussion, and then we had two contests for prizes donated by our affiliate, Tarot Media Company.  Since Death is usually numbered Card 13, we went around the table, and the person whose birthdate was closest to the 13th of the month.  Rose Red won (her birthday is the 14th), but she already had the deck we were giving away, so Kim won it. She opened it on the spot, and gave us all a chance to ooh and aah over it.

Then, for the deck bag prize, we played Tarot Poker.  I passed a deck around, and everyone drew a card. Majors trump minors, World high. Susa drew the Priestess card – a fitting one for her, I must say! – and won herself a new deck bag!

We chatted a bit more, and finally everyone headed back into the day.

Susan Gold of Tarot Insights wrote about it on her blog!

Comments from the attendees:

Kim von A: Anastasia, I truly enjoyed the class …was it just last Saturday?  I think the part I enjoyed the most was that it wasn’t just another..”this symbol means this” or “when this card appears with this card you should read it this way.”  The quotes about death and the observations of the other students gave an interesting perspective on the subject and added to my overall view of interpreting the death card.

Susa B: I loved learning about the diversity of concepts about death from different cultures, during different
times, and how that is reflected in the many Tarot Death cards.  Little tidbits, like the names of the Angels of Death from Christian, Jewish and Muslim cultures added to my collection of folklore.

Rose Red: I really enjoyed the interaction you encouraged in the class. She gave us information but encouraged us to talk and express our views as well as listen to what she was presenting. I also loved the quotes from the different time periods as they pertain to Death and the Death card through the ages. It was interesting to see the cycles of how death is viewed as cultures grow and change.

Carole Pierce of Crossroads Tarot: I’ve never been in a  tarot class that has an arts and crafts component, I really loved it, and would love to do similar or other projects.  I really enjoyed the workshop, and it gave me some great ideas for my classroom.  Thank you for such an inspiring afternoon!

I hope to see everyone at the December 12 class, Tarot and Holidays!  Details and registration information can be found on the Tarot Media Company website.

Friday Lunchtime Tarot Class with Susan Gold

Filed Under Classes and Workshops | 2 Comments

Susan Gold of Tarot Insights has begun a class series at her office in San Mateo, every Friday over the lunch hour.  Rose and I attended yseterday’s class, and had a great time!

Susan’s office is comfortable and warm, and very welcoming – much like Susan herself.  Susan provides Rider Waite Smith decks to use during class, and also sets out several of her decks for people to look at.  Two other women were in attendance, so we had a group of five – a perfect size for a workshop.

Susan led us through a warm up exercise, contemplating the King of Cups.  Even though this is a card we’ve all seen and know, it was interesting to hear everyone give their observations after really looking at the card for a few minutes.  One of the women pointed out that he’s drawn with no shoes on – a king in his socks!  That certainly gave all of us a new perspective on the card!

The main exercise was in three parts:

1. Think of someone close to you – a dear friend, spouse/significant other, family member, etc.  Go through the deck and pull the cards which you think represent how that person sees you.  Make a note of those cards.  (Susan provided us a list so we could check off the cards in each part of the exercise.  I used a different color pen for each person so I could compare them more easily.)

2.  Then think of someone who doesn’t know you very well, and pull the cards which you think represent how that person sees you.  Mark them on  your list.

3.  Think of someone you’re not in touch with any more – a friend you’ve lost touch with, a former lover, an old nemesis – and pull cards for how that person sees you.  Mark them on your list.

I picked a dear friend, a consulting client, and my former husband (divorced since 1997) for the exercise.  The most interesting pattern to emerge was that Death and Tower were included in each set:

For my friend, because we’ve been through a lot together, and we’ve both changed so much over the course of our friendship.

For my consulting client, because I’ve done so many layoffs for her company in the past year (almost 25% of their staff – the employees joke about taking up a collection to buy a black robe and scythe for me).

For my former husband, because my decision to end our marriage felt like a Tower event to him, and was a major transition for both of us.

One card which came up only with my friend was The Fool – that’s because we do a lot of foolish things together, and we’re not afraid to show that side of ourselves to each other.

One card which came up only for my client was the Magician.  I chose that card because in some ways, what I do seems magical to her – she chooses not to know much about my area of consulting, and the idea that I know what I do and am able to do the work for her company which I do is almost mystical to her.

One card which came  up only for my former husband was the Five of Wands, representing the disagreements which led to the end of our relationship.

This was a great exercise, and I’m definitely going to repeat it with other people in mind!

The class is every Friday, noon to 1:30 pm. You can find the details and directions on Susan’s website at Tarot Insights.

See you at Susan’s class!

Travel to Greece with Rachel Pollack in 2010!

Filed Under Travel | Comments Off on Travel to Greece with Rachel Pollack in 2010!

The one and only Rachel Pollack is leading a spiritual adventure to Greece in May 2010.

The trip includes visits to: Delphi, the site of the great Oracle, with the mountain of the nine Muses rising behind it; Olympia, home of the original Olympic Games, and site of a massive temple to Zeus; the island of Mikonos, known for its beauty and its closeness to the sacred island of Delos; and Naxos, largest of the Cycladic Islands.  On Naxos we will follow some of the lines through the myth of Ariadne and Theseus, through the land and sea, and through our own oracular initiation.

Tarot Class with Anastasia – The Death Card! November 14

Filed Under Classes and Workshops | 1 Comment

For the next class on November 14: Since November starts with La Dia de los Muertos, we’ll join the festivities by examining the Death card. While modern readers often spin the card as representing change and transition, sometimes the Death card is about Death. Bring your cards, notebook, and your experience working with the Death card.

This workshop is suitable for all levels of Tarot experience. Whether you’ve been reading since before Woodstock, or have a brand new deck still in shrinkwrap, you’ll learn useful information and interesting ideas to enhance your reading technique.

Each class runs from 1:00 – 4:30 pm, held in the Tarot Media Company studios on Potrero Hill.  Address and directions will be provided with your registration confirmation.

Due to space considerations, we request that you preregister for the class. You can register for the class on the Tarot Media Company website by clicking this link, or click here to email for registration.

The class fee is $15.00, and includes class materials, refreshments – and a chance to win a fabulous Tarot treasure! Tarot Media Company is kindly donating an item or two each month for an end-of-workshop prize – one month it might be a raffle, another month a contest – whatever my inspiration devises!

See you in November!

Thursday Night Readings at Wicked Grounds Cafe

Filed Under Uncategorized | Comments Off on Thursday Night Readings at Wicked Grounds Cafe

I’ll be doing Tarot readings on Thursday nights from 7:00  -10:00 pm at San Francisco’s own Wicked Grounds Cafe, on Eighth Street near Folsom.  Wicked Grounds is “San Francisco’s First and Only Kink Café and Boutique”, and unlike any cafe you’ve ever been in (unless you’ve been to Coffee, Cake, and Kink in London!).

The vibe is friendly, the decor suggestive but not outrageous (well, there’s one picture in the back room, but you don’t have to go in there), and it’s the only place we know of where you can pick up a special toy and a loop of bondage rope at the end of your coffee date.

They’ve also started serving real food in addition to pastries – sandwiches and salads to start this week, and Rose White (the owner) has promised a new surprise on the menu soon!

So, for something a little different with your coffee and cards, stop by on Thursday – get an early start on the weekend!
