Reading Tarot at The Hotel California

Filed Under Uncategorized | Comments Off on Reading Tarot at The Hotel California

(With apologies to Don Henley, Glenn Frey, and all the members of The Eagles.)

The gig sounding promising – a private birthday party for a woman who was turning 40 and several of her friends at a verrrry nice hotel overlooking the ocean on a full moonlight night. Susan (names have been changed to protect the identities of the parties involved) agreed to go with me, so we packed our Tarot bags and headed into the night, towards the ocean, cruising the dark woods and hills of California.

We arrived at the hotel a good hour early, having encounted no traffic at all.  I’d kept the radio turned down to enjoy Susan’s delightful company. On an impulse, I reached over and turned it up, just in time to hear the opening note to the studio version of “Hotel California” by The Eagles, and just then we rounded a curve in the road – and our destination loomed up out of the night, against the backdrop of the ocean and sky – a moment I wish I could have captured on film.

On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air
Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light
My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night

We paused to admire the spectacular effect of the architecture, the lights, and the night time sky, then drove into the courtyard.  A very polite parking valet helped us remove our bags from the car, and a second valet whisked it away instantly.  (Remember Coppola’s “Bram Stoker’s Dracula”? And the driverless carriage that whisked Harker to the castle?  The car was gone that quickly.)

There she stood in the doorway;
I heard the mission bell
And I was thinking to myself,
‘This could be Heaven or this could be Hell’
Then she lit up a candle and she showed me the way
There were voices down the corridor,
I thought I heard them say…

Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place
Such a lovely face
Plenty of room at the Hotel California
Any time of year, you can find it here

The first valet was determined to walk us to where our party was sequestered in a private dining room.  I’d rushed out of work and needed a few minutes to assemble myself, so we asked for directions to the ladies’ room, and suddenly he disappeared.

Having transformed from Day Job into Tarot Reader Mode, I went in search of our party while Susan kept an eye on our bags in the completely empty corridor – actually, that entire wing was empty, and still, and a bit eerie.

As I walked into the club to find the party, the piano player struck up – wait for it – “Hotel California.”  I took a deep breath, approached the maitre d’, and found our clients at a very large table, covered in food and drinks (the table, not the clients).  The birthday girl informed me that they’d be along after they’d finished eating.  One of her friends gave me the key to their suite so we could set up the reading areas.

Her mind is Tiffany-twisted, she got the Mercedes bends
She got a lot of pretty, pretty boys, that she calls friends
How they dance in the courtyard, sweet summer sweat.
Some dance to remember, some dance to forget

I found Susan, and we repaired to the suite to set up – physically and mentally – for the evening ahead.  I told her about the piano player’s choice of music, and we had a good laugh on our way up in the elevator.

So I called up the Captain,
‘Please bring me my wine’
He said, ‘We haven’t had that spirit here since nineteen sixty nine’
And still those voices are calling from far away,
Wake you up in the middle of the night
Just to hear them say…

Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place
Such a lovely face
They livin’ it up at the Hotel California
What a nice surprise, bring your alibis

Mirrors on the ceiling,
Pink champagne on ice . . .

We found a gorgeously appointed suite set up for a party – food, beverages, alcohol – and, yes, pink champagne on ice.  At this point, the evening’s theme was undeniably clear; we just had to roll with it.  Susan couldn’t remember all the lyrics, so after we’d set up two reading areas, I recited them for her. We took a few deep breaths, and then we heard the party approaching.

We took a few minutes for introductions, and then we each took our first client to the separate rooms for readings.  Susan took the birthday girl, and I took the first guest, and off we went.

Client readings are confidential, so we won’t discuss details.  Let’s just say that all of the readings fit in quite neatly with the evening’s them.

And she said ‘We are all just prisoners here, of our own device’
And in the master’s chambers,
They gathered for the feast
The stab it with their steely knives,
But they just can’t kill the beast

Last thing I remember, I was
Running for the door
I had to find the passage back
To the place I was before
‘Relax,’ said the night man,
We are programmed to receive.
You can checkout any time you like,
but you can never leave . . . .

After we finished the readings, we were supposed to lead the party in a fun discussion so they could share their thoughts and experiences.  It was quite clear, however, that what they wanted to do was drink, so we packed our things, gave our thanks, and got the hell out of that place.

A third valet brought the car around, helped us load the bags, and we took off into the moonlit night, not looking back.  The drive back to San Francisco was lovely – moonlight on the mountains and trees. We talked about the readings, and the evening.  As I was dropping off Susan at her house, we did a quick scan on the radio – but no Eagles.

As usual, the next day I called the client for feedback on the event – no answer, so I left a voicemail.  Later, I was out running errands, turned on the car radio, and – voila! – the opening notes to “Hotel California” – just as my phone rang, showing the client’s number on the caller ID.

Surreal – and yet, it happened!

Podcast #26 is hosted by Anastasia, Rose Red and Andrew (Artemis J. was once again having a case of real life), discussing Dan Pelletier‘s new audio book “The Process“.  There’s more than one way to learn to read Tarot, and Dan’s audiobook is a great option for aural learners – and everyone else.  You can also learn a lot about taking care of roses! Click here to listen!

Rose Red and Andrew Are Married!

For those who’ve been following the romance of Rose Red and Andrew, they are married as of about six hours ago!

Despite a chilly morning, the sun came out and suddenly the courtyard was filled with light and warmth, both physical and emotional.  Surrounded by family and friends from all over, they had a short ceremony which I had the honor to celebrate. Rose Red was stunning in a beautiful red silk sari, and Andrew was the picture of elegance in a Victorian dress kilt.

The Decktet: A Useful, Interesting, Non-Tarot Divination Deck

Filed Under Decks | 1 Comment

My darling husband brought The Decktet by P.D. Magnus to my attention some time ago, and I finally thought about it when I was actually at my computer and had an internet connection to check it out.

It’s not a traditionally structured Tarot deck, but the visual interest and unique take on cards and cartomancy make it worth exploring.  The deck has six suits of ten cards each, plus three Pawn cards and an Excuse card. The twist is that, while the Aces and Crowns all have a single suit, each numbered card has two suits, and the Pawns have three suits each, which makes for more interest in using them for divination (and a lot of fun in playing the games!).  Thus the deck has only 36 cards.

The Excuse card has no suit and no rank.  Magnus says to omit it for purposes of “fortune telling” (his term) – but you might try including it and consider it to be The Fool from a traditional Tarot, or let it simply show you how it fits into the spread.

The suits are Moons, Suns, Waves, Leaves, Wyrms, Knots, in order of hierarchy.  The suits are combined in different ways on each card: the Moons-Suns, Waves-Leaves, and Wyrms-Knots combinations occur three times each, making them more common than any other combination. The Moons-Wyrms, Suns-Leaves, and Waves-Knots combinations do not occur on any of the cards.  You could look at the presence or absence of a particular suit or combination of suits to add depth to the reading.

The cards are divided into Personalities, Places, and Events, rather than a major and minor arcana.  Whether a card represents more quotidian or archetypal forces is determined by its position and relationship to other cards, rather than inherently designed into the card.

Magnus offers the cards in a spirit of fun and “for entertainment purposes only. Let no harm come of it.” And yet, the cards do provide good readings and can be used in place of a more traditional Tarot to gain perspective and insight into a situation.

The site gives a brief overview of the meanings of the cards.  As with traditional Tarot decks, the gender and appearance of the person depicted on the card can represent a quality of being or personality, rather than necessarily representing a person of that specific gender, occupation, etc., and the meaning is interpreted by the position of the card and its relationship to other cards in the spread.

Magnus shares three spreads on his website, one with four cards and the others with 10 cards. I especially enjoyed this instruction on the four card spread, which is done by separating the cards into four stacks: “If you deal through the whole deck without completing the four stacks, then the cards will not speak on this matter — put the kettle on and make a cup of tea.”  The deck also works well with typical Tarot spreads.

The Decktet also has a discussion forum for sharing ideas in the Decktet Wiki. Most people are developing games for it, but I’d love to start a discussion group on using it for divination. (Hint, hint – check it out and start posting!)

You can download it for free and print it on regular paper or cardstock, or you can order a printed copy for $10, plus $5 shipping to the US and Canada. (Shipping to other countries is available by contacting Magnus directly.)  If you’re looking for a gift that’s almost guaranteed to be something your Tarot friend hasn’t seen before, this is it!

While not a traditional Tarot, the Decktet is imaginative, fun, and useful, and it’s certainly worth taking the time to explore!

Podcast #25: Emily Carding and The Transparent Tarot

Filed Under Decks, Podcasts | Comments Off on Podcast #25: Emily Carding and The Transparent Tarot

Podcast #25 is hosted by Anastasia and Rose Red (Andrew was studying for mid-terms, and Artemis J. was once again having a case of real life), calling quite long distance to chat up Emily Carding about her amazing, beautiful, and unique Transparent Tarot, published by Schiffer Books.  In our opinion, it’s the one “must own” deck we’ve seen this year (and there’s been no shortage of new decks!).  Click here to listen!

Transparent Tarot by Emily Carding

Transparent Tarot by Emily Carding

The talented and delightful Emily Carding has outdone herself with her latest deck, The Transparent Tarot, published by Schiffer Books. “Amazing” does not even begin to describe this unique deck. I strongly encourage you to visit Emily’s website, which has a slideshow of card images in various combinations that only begin to show the potential of this deck.

The cards feature simple, clean images based on the RWS progression.  The difference is that the cards are printed on clear plastic, so you can layer them to create more complex images and enhance the reading.  You can create a stack of all the cards in one of the minor suits – cups, for example, and create compelling narratives based on the interactions and transformations of the images.  The cards are meant to be read in layers, and the three layer Celtic Cross spread Emily includes in the book will give you a new appreciation for this classic spread.

The majors are striking in combination (again, if you haven’t seen the cards, check out the examples on Emily’s website).  The court cards in particular are fabulous – the Queen and Page combined appear as the child and adult of the figure, as do the combined King and Knight.  Except for the court cards, the figures in the cards are gender neutral, so that the reader and client have more space to see the cards representing a person in the client’s life without it having a predilection to say that it represents a woman or a man.  As we discuss with Emily in our podcast, this gender neutrality also makes it an excellent deck to work with clients who are dealing with issues of gender identity and/or gender transition.

The majors, courts, and minors also mix incredibly well. Emily took great care with the geometry of the drawings so that the combinations work visually, regardless of whether the stack includes majors, courts, or minors, and creates a multilayered narrative of incredible richness and depth.

The idea of reversals goes one step further, in that a card may not only be reversed from top to bottom in shuffling, but may end up reversed from right to left.

The cards are easy to shuffle and lay out.  The kit comes with a white reading cloth, which makes it easier to see the images.  Emily also suggests reading with them on a light box, which makes the cards even more dramatic – the colors are more intense, and the light makes it possible to notice details not otherwise apparent, and adds luminosity and depth to the card images.  Using the light box is like viewing slides – only instead of a series of out-of-focus shots of your Aunt Edna’s last trip to The Hebrides, you’re working with archetypes.

You can also layer the cards over another deck printed on cardstock.  Choosing the second deck can be challenging. I tried Alexandra Genetti‘s Wheel of Change Tarot, but it’s so colorful, the Transparent images disappeared into the printed card.  Same for the RWS.  I found it works well with more pastel decks, such as Brian Williams’ Minchiate Tarot.

Being clear, the cards will show fingerprints with use.  One reader I know said she washed hers gently in the sink, with no apparent damage to the cards.  I find that simply giving them a gentle wipe with a soft cloth does the trick (and no dishpan hands!).

The set comes beautifully packaged, and includes a book written by Emily, which discusses the card meanings and gives ideas for spreads and for working with them in a variety of ways.

We recently recorded a podcast with Emily to talk about the deck in depth, which will be posted here on Tarot Pathways very soon!

The deck is available in the US directly from Schiffer Books, and in the UK through Bushwood Books.  You can also find it at your local independent bookseller, or (if you receive a gift certificate from family or a friend), through Amazon.com and Amazon UK.  As always, we encourage ordering directly from the publisher or one of the independent distributors.

If you acquire only one new Tarot this month (or quarter, or year), make it the Transparent Tarot!

Gift Ideas (Good Year ‘Round!)

Filed Under Uncategorized | Comments Off on Gift Ideas (Good Year ‘Round!)

Even with all of the various economic uncertainties and disasters of the year, we’re all inspired at this time of year to do *something* for those we love (or like, or just work with).  Tarot Pathways presents our 2008 Holiday Gift Guide (Good The Year ‘Round, Not Just in December!).

A Gift of Self

The best possible gift of all (if your recipient is open): a Tarot reading, with you or someone you trust and respect.  This is a gift of your time, skills, wisdom, and love – especially if you are doing the reading.  I understand that there are probably people in your life to whom you could not offer such a gift (your boss, perhaps, or someone whose personal beliefs do not accommodate Tarot), but for the people who can accept such a gift, it’s quite meaningful.

Where to Shop

If your recipient would love a new deck, the one and only place to shop is, of course, The Tarot Garden.  This is especially helpful if you are trying to track down a deck that is long out of print, or if you’re in a position to give something unusual and special.

Contemplating giving a book?  I understand the lure of Amazon.com – fast, easy, and having infinite inventory.  However, we at Tarot Pathways strongly encourage you to support your local independent bookseller.  Amazon is great for doing research – and it’s very kind of them to offer server space for your family and friends to store their wish lists – but a good local bookseller is a treasure.  Not sure who your local is?  Not sure what kind of books they carry? You can check www.BookSense.com and find out!   Don’t have a local favorite, or you’re not comfortable ordering Tarot from them?  We highly recommend Fields Books in San Francisco.  Providing insight and information to seekers since 1932, Fields offers an astonishing range of books, plus calendars and fun items, and all available for mail order. If they don’t have it, they can special order it! David, Ellen, Esther, and Heidi are knowledgeable, friendly, and have suggestions if you’re not sure where to start.

Specific Gift Ideas:

We admit to a bit of bias here, but we’re wild about the 21st Century Tarot DVD with James Wanless, Ph.D., “Tarot Into The Light”.  We think it’s a great introduction to Tarot in general, and James and the Voyager deck in particular.  And how often do you have an uninterrupted hour with a Tarot teacher?

If you’re looking for additional Tarot DVDs, we also recommend Joseph Ernest Martin‘s DVD on Learning the Celtic Cross, featuring his wonderful Quest Tarot.  (See our review for more information.)

We also really enjoy Dan Pelletier’s audiobook of The Process.  We recently recorded a podcast with Dan, which will be up soon, as well as a full review of the audiobook.

And, for this year’s Ultimate Cool Tarot Deck, we cannot say enough about Emily Carding‘s Transparent Tarot.  This fantastic deck is available through Schffer Books and your local independent bookseller.  (Yes, you can buy it on Amazon.com, but please consider before doing so – Amazon offers discounts because they pay the publisher less for the goods – which means the author receives less for their work.)  Podcast with Emily coming soon.  You can read our deck review for a sneak preview.  In the meantime, check out Schffer Books and see for yourself!
